Collier County was created on
May 8, 1923 when Florida Governor Cary A. Hardee signed Senate Bill 149, Chapter 9362, officially creating Florida State’s 62nd county.
The Community will be celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout 2023 with programs and events commemorating this historic milestone.

The Bell Aircraft Corp.'s P-39 was the first fighter plane in the world to have a three-wheel forward landing gear and engine placed behind the pilot. The aircraft was literally designed around its most formidable weapon, a 37mm cannon mounted in the nose of the place. Airacobras bore the brunt of combat in the opening years of WWII and proved themselves in the South Pacific, Europe and North Africa. In March 1944, nine P-39 fighters arrived in Naples for permanent assignment. One of these was destroyed 4 days later in a crash over Bonita Springs.

Jungle Larry (Tetzlaff) in African Safari uniform, holding a small wild cat. Colonel Lawrence Erskin "Jungle Larry" Tetzlaff brought his combination of talent, knowledge and showmanship to Naples in 1969 with the opening of Jungle Larry's African Safari. A wild animal expert, author, lecturer, filmmaker, trainer and television personality, in his younger days Tetzlaff had trapped exotic animals with Frank "Bring 'Em Back Alive" Buck, milked venomous snakes to make serum for soldiers in the Pacific during World War II, and worked as a stand-in for Johnny Weismuller in the Tarzan movies filmed at Silver Springs, Florida, doing all of the alligator and python wrestling scenes. He ran the park until his death in 1984.

Now completely restored, this second oldest residence in Naples is headquarters for the Collier County Historical Society. FLORIDA 18030c Collier-Seminole State Pk. Barron Collier Monument. One of a set of four from Meston's Travels. Collier Monument was erected on January 1, 1941 by Collier County, just 2 years after Collier died in March 1939. Bust on pedestal was one of two. One was stolen and the other vandalized. The Collier County Museum donated a third bust to the park on April 27, 2002.
