William Baumann standing on the wing of Bell P-39 Airacobra at the Naples Army Airfield. The Bell Aircraft Corp.'s P-39 was the first fighter plane in the world to have a three-wheel forward landing gear and engine placed behind the pilot. The aircraft was literally designed around its most formidable weapon, a 37mm cannon mounted in the nose of the place. Airacobras bore the brunt of combat in the opening years of WWII and proved themselves in the South Pacific, Europe and North Africa. In March 1944, nine P-39 fighters arrived in Naples for permanent assignment. One of these was destroyed 4 days later in a crash over Bonita Springs. Courtesy of Collier County Museums.

Mamie and Clarence Tooke in front of the Bank of Naples shortly after its opening at 796 5th Ave S. The Bank of Naples opened on February 15, 1949 with $108,000 in deposits with a population in Naples at the time of 1600. Mayor W. Roy Smith was its first President. The couple were married in 1932. Six years after the Bank of Naples opened, Clarence died and Mamie assumed role as President, a first for a woman in the State of Florida. The Bank of Naples merged with Barnett Bank in 1974-5. In 1979, Mamie was named Chairman of the Board and CEO. She remained in the business for 30 years and retired on December 31, 1991. Original artifact is a digital scan. Captain Howard Fields of Naples Airlines, welcomes Miss Wanda Snell to one of the airline's Lockheed 10E Electra aircraft at the Naples Municipal Airport. The company's aircraft carried "Naples Airlines & Provincetown-Boston Airline" markings until December 1979, when "Old Man Van" stepped down and turned the business over to his two sons.
